An indefinite curfew was imposed on a town in the eastern Indian state of West Bengal today after militants shot dead six members of the ruling Communist Party.
A police spokesman said six militants, armed with sophisticated weapons, raided the party's committee office in Dhupguri town, 550 kilometers from the state capital, Calcutta, last night.
The spokesman said the militants, who arrived on three motorbikes, sprayed the cadres with bullets, killing four on the spot, while two more died in hospital.
Another 15 people were injured in the attack.
The communist party has called a general strike on Monday in Jalpaiguri district to protest the killings.
The KLO has several training camps in the forests of Bhutan bordering India and is fighting for a separate state for Kampaturis, the indigenous people, in the state of Jalpaiguri.
