London's £20 million "bouncing" Millennium Bridge closed from 10 p.m. last night and could be shut for weeks.

The 320-metre structure across the River Thames in central London swayed alarmingly under the weight of thousands of people at its opening on Saturday. Last night, the Millennium Bridge Trust, which built the bridge, said it would be shut so engineers could continue their investigation "into the cause of excessive movement of the bridge in certain conditions and to carry out work to correct the problem".

Designed by the highly-acclaimed Foster and Partners, the bridge was inaugurated by the Queen last month. The company said the bridge was intended to have some movement, but those crossing it this weekend spoke of considerable sway.
