Petrosani - Some 15,000 Romanian miners returned to work yesterday after more than two weeks on strike, and after a march on Bucharest was only called off after a last-minute deal with the government, industry sources said.
The miners in the Jiu Valley had returned over the weekend to their homes centred on the town of Petrosani, 300 km west of the Romanian capital, last Friday.
Few details have been revealed of the deal struck between the miners' leader, Mr Miron Cozma, and the Prime Minister, Mr Radu Vasile, to end the protest in a monastery west of Bucharest.
