The Minister for Transport, Mr Martin Cullen, will today perform the opening ceremony today of the new nine-kilometre bypass of Carrickmacross.
It is claimed the €28 million route will cut an estimated 20 minutes off the journey from Dublin to the Border.
It is the first of three bypass routes designed to divert traffic from the towns of Carrickmacross, Castleblayney and Monaghan town.
The completion of the remaining two schemes will apparently further reduce travel time between the border and Dublin by nearly 50 minutes.
The project was funded by the Department of Transport through the National Roads Authority and the EU Regional Development Fund.
Monaghan county manager Mr. Declan Nelson says a unique feature of the project is that approval has been given by the NRA for the new stretch to be named "The Kavanagh Way" in memory of the Monaghan-born poet-author Patrick Kavanagh.
It is the first road project of its kind in Ireland to be named after a local figure.
