A Nigerian student who was permitted to return to Ireland last year to complete his Leaving Certificate exams has been given two weeks to leave the country under a deportation order signed by the Minister for Justice, Michael McDowell, this week.

However, Olukunle (Kunle) Elukanlo's legal team are understood to be preparing a legal challenge against the order.

Mr Elukanlo (20) was served with a deportation order, signed by Mr McDowell, on Tuesday of this week. This allows him two weeks to prepare for his own departure, or to be deported by the State after March 28th.

Mr Elukanlo is due to appear at Dún Laoghaire district court on April 4th next in relation to a number of road-traffic offences allegedly committed since his return to Ireland. These include using an uninsured vehicle with no NCT certificate, failure to produce either an insurance or NCT certificate, and driving a car without road tax or certificate.

Mr Elukanlo was convicted of other road-traffic offences before his original deportation last March.

A spokesman for the Department of Justice refused to comment on individual cases.

Rosanna Flynn of campaign group Residents against Racism said Mr Elukanlo is "still talking" with his legal team, but declined to comment further on what this might entail.

"I'm extremely concerned. The last time this happened he was thrown on to the streets of Lagos in his school uniform," Ms Flynn said.

"There are many others like him, and they are all awaiting deportation ... It shows [ the Minister] is extremely inflexible."

Mr Elukanlo was originally deported from the country in March of last year, but returned some three weeks later after Mr McDowell overturned his decision in the face of strong public pressure.
