London - Britain's Press Complaints Commission said yesterday it had started an investigation into whether the editor of the Mirror newspaper broke industry rules by buying shares his paper was about to tip.

"We have had a complaint from a member of the public and that has enabled us to get in touch with the newspaper and ask for comments," a spokesman for the PCC said. He said the commission would be looking at whether Piers Morgan, the Mirror's editor, had broken the code of conduct on financial journalism by buying some £20,000 worth of Viglen Technology shares the day before the Mirror published an "exclusive" story tipping them to soar.
