There were wins for two out of four of the Irish boxers vying for Olympic qualification in Pescara, Italy tonight.
Middleweight Darren Sutherland stopped Scotland's James Quigley after opening up a 20 point gap by the third round and now needs at least two more wins to secure qualification.
Sutherland is back in action tomorrow but is yet to learn who he faces in the last 16.
Featherweight David Oliver Joyce also faces a quarter-final bout after coming from behind to beat Armenian Azat Hobhannisyan 37-21.
Heavyweight Con Sheehan from Clonmel was beaten 15-9 by Greek Ilias Pavlidis, while this afternoon John Joe McDonagh, who replaced the injured Roy Sheehan, was beaten 14-4 by Latvian Dmitrijs Sostaks.
Bantamweights, featherweights, welterweights and middleweights can qualify by reaching their respective finals or by defeating another beaten semi-finalist in a 'box off'.
