Gardai are still trying to establish the cause of a fire at a mobile home in Galway in which two people died.

The fire broke out shortly after 2am in the mobile home, which was parked on an isolated road near the Poolboy landfill outside Ballinasloe.

The alarm was raised by the occupants of a nearby caravan.

The bodies of Christy (59) and Janey Ward (54) were found inside. The couple were members of the Traveller community.

It is believed the couple, who had been out socialising last night, were alone at the time of the fire.

A Garda forensic team has carried out a full technical examination. Foul play is not suspected at this stage.

The bodies were taken to Portiuncula Hospital, Ballinasloe, where State pathologist Dr Marie Cassidy was due to carry out a postmortem examination.

The couple, who were originally from the Mountbellew area of Co Galway, had lived in Ballinasloe for several periods over the past 15 years.

Ballinasloe Sinn Féin councillor Dermot Connolly said it was a terrible tragedy.

“It is terrible to see two people lose their lives like this,” he said. “The emergency services were on the scene as fast as they could be once they were notified.”
