The elderly are to be taught how to use mobile phones under a new government scheme, it was announced today.

Information Minister Tom Kitt said training for older people on new technology would be rolled out in 2008. Senior Outreach Programmes will involve talks to pensioners' groups on how computers, the internet and mobile phones can benefit them.

Mr Kitt said: "Research conducted by my Department in 2007 showed that many senior citizens owned mobile phones - but the vast majority were only getting a fraction of the benefit from them that they could, especially at this time of year, which can be a lonely time for those living alone.

"Many older people simply use them to make phone calls, and don't take advantage of the other benefits. "This programme could be the perfect opportunity to learn how to make modern technology work for people.

"I am determined to increase the number of older people involved in the knowledge society," he said. Details of how the outreach programme will operate has yet to be finalised, but groups with an interest in the scheme are being urged to contact the Department of the Taoiseach for information.
