A Dublin model, Ms Laura Bermingham, is to be paid "substantial damages" and legal costs by the Sunday Mirror under the settlement of a libel action she brought against the newspaper, the High Court was told yesterday.

Ms Bermingham (27) sued MGN Ltd, publishers of the newspaper, following an article in the issue of April 16th, 1995. In an apology read before Mr Justice Moriarty and a jury by Mr Donal O'Donnell SC, for MGN, it was stated that "wholly unfounded allegations" were published concerning Ms Bermingham, together with a photograph.

The apology continued: "The article and headline which accompanied the photograph contained untrue and offensive allegations which adversely reflected on Ms Bermingham's conduct as a model during a fashion show in 1993."

The Sunday Mirror unreservedly apologised to her and her family.
