The Belfast trial of paratrooper Corporal Lee Clegg moved to a police hangar in Knocknagoney yesterday where a defence pathologist demonstrated with models how he claimed Ms Karen Reilly (18) could have been shot dead.

Dr Ian West said the woman, killed when soldiers opened fire on a stolen Vauxhall Astra eight years ago, must have sat up after initially being shot, and was then shot a second time in the back.

In the hangar the defence had a mock-up of the Astra with holes drilled in its back passenger door, to simulate bullet holes.

Using a young model for Ms Reilly, and an iron rod to show the path of the bullets, Dr West claimed that Ms Reilly must have been lying face down across the back seat of the car when first shot.

Watched by Mr Justice Kerr, lawyers and prosecution experts but not Corporal Clegg, who had exercised his right not to attend, Dr West said Ms Reilly must then have sat upright to be shot again, this time through the window of the car.

He added that it was an "unpredictable reaction. Some people collapse, while others get up" after being shot.
