Scaremongering by Lord Molyneaux, former leader of the Ulster Unionists Party, was causing anxiety for people who were already on the edge in the North, claimed Mr Paddy McGowan (FF). He was referring to an allegation by Lord Molyneaux that sensitive United Kingdom security information was contained in some leaked Department of Foreign Affairs files and that part of the material had been passed on to the IRA.

The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr Andrews, should take steps to allay the fears of those who were very much on edge and who found it easy to accept such wild statements, added Mr McGowan.

The acting Seanad leader, Mr Tom Fitzgerald, assured the House that a debate on Northern Ireland was high on the business priority list.
