Moneylender murder trial

A verdict is expected on Monday in the trial of a Limerick man accused of murdering a moneylender in the city

A verdict is expected on Monday in the trial of a Limerick man accused of murdering a moneylender in the city. The jury heard closing speeches at the Central Criminal Court yesterday. Mr Noel Kelly (19) has denied the murder of Mr John Keane (26) at the house they shared at O'Malley Park, Southill, Limerick, on July 5th, 1996.

During the two-week trial, the jury has heard that in the early hours of July 5th, two men met in a laneway near Middle Hill in O'Malley Park estate. There they donned dark gloves and balaclavas and, both carrying shotguns, went to the house where Mr Keane was and shot at him in his bedroom. He pushed past them and ran from the house, but they pursued him on to the green outside, and there he was shot again and battered severely on the head and face.
