Juan Pablo Montoya today sensationally clinched the first pole position of his fledgling Formula One career as the power of the BMW engine blew away the challenge of Ferrari and McLaren in qualifying for tomorrow's German Grand Prix.

Colombian Montoya shattered the hopes of the thousands of German fans at Hockenheim by beating Williams team-mate Ralf Schumacher to top spot, while brother Michael was left trailing in fourth, equalling his worst performance of the season.

Montoya, in his debut season, scorched round the 4.2-mile circuit in one minute 38.117 seconds, smashing the lap record set by Rubens Barrichello in his Ferrari in last year's race by more than six seconds.

Jaguar’s Eddie Irvine was beaten into eleventh by Jordan’s Jarno Trulli. Ricardo Zonta who replaced the sacked Heinz-Harald Frentzen could only manage fifteenth.
