Racing:Ryan Moore is to undergo surgery on a broken humerus and broken thumb at 5pm today in the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford. His mother, Jayne, reports the three-times champion jockey to be in "good spirits" ahead of the two operations.

The three-times champion jockey sustained the injuries in a nasty fall at Goodwood on Saturday. His mount, Verdant, was brought down in the melee following a fatal injury to Captain John Nixon about four furlongs out in the Toyo Tires Summer Handicap.

“He’s in good spirits and he’s been in the gym,” said Mrs Moore. “He’s going to have surgery at five o’clock this evening on his shoulder and his hand. He’s going to have the two operations. After much consultation they have decided they are going to operate on his shoulder.

“Hopefully he’ll be on his way home late tomorrow, but we’ll have to see. Both are normally day cases but, having the two together, it just depends how he comes out of the anaesthetic. The two injuries are tricky, but treatable.”

The fall has ruined Moore’s hopes of regaining the jockeys’ title as he had been involved in a fascinating three-way battle with reigning champion Paul Hanagan and Silvestre de Sousa, but it is hoped he will be back in action before the end of the season.

His aim would be to be fit to bid for back-to-back victories in the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe on Workforce, trained by his main retainer, Michael Stoute.

“The consultants’ initial reaction was he’d be out for 12 weeks maximum which is not terribly far away. The Arc is nine weeks away, but it depends on what they say today,” Mrs Moore added. “Thanks to everyone who has be kind enough to ask after Ryan and we are passing on their good wishes.”
