Mickey Moran is the second high-profile manager this week to step down from his post as the Mayo boss quit just two days after Jack O'Connor vacated his position as Kerry manager.

Moran and O'Connor locked horns in this year's All-Ireland football final which the Kingdom won and it appears Moran struggled to get over the disappointment of losing and felt it was the right time to step down.

His decision to quit was made following talks with the Mayo county board and officials last night.

On behalf of the departing manager the county board said Moran wanted to "take this opportunity to thank his management team, backroom staff and the players, who were a pleasure to work with at all times".

He also thanked the supporters and "wishes his successor good luck and every success and no one will be happier than him to see Mayo lift Sam Maguire".

The Derry man also managed Sligo, Donegal and Derry before taking over from John Maughan as Mayo manager in October 2005.

He took the county all the way to this year's final but where comprehensively beaten by O'Connor's Kerry side.

The names of Liam McHale, Pat Holmes and Noel Connelly have been suggested as Moran's potential replacement at this early stage.
