New York, Monday.
The lawless condition prevailing in American cities was illustrated here last night.
A "hold-up man" fired through the door of a cinema in the northern part of the city and killed his own confederate, who was on the watch outside. He then fled panic-stricken, without getting any booty.
An audience of 500 were watching the show and heard a shot fired. They did not see the robber enter the cashier's office as she was leaving with the night's receipts, but the manager of the cinema pushed the girl and the robber back into the office and closed the door upon them.
The robber then fired through the door and missed the manager, but hit his comrade.
He then released the cashier and escaped with his wounded partner to a motor car which was standing in front of the building, with the engine running. One of the thieves escaped in the car, but his confederate was found dying by a policeman in a doorway nearby.
