Sao Paulo - Brazilian authorities yesterday transferred inmates, banned visits and tightened security amid fears of fresh prison violence. Fears were raised as inmates threatened to stage an even bigger revolt than the one that left 19 people dead earlier this week.
At the heart of the security crackdown was a drive to rid Sao Paulo state prisons of mobile phones, which allowed a gang to simultaneously rally 20,000 inmates in 29 jails for the biggest prison riot in Brazil's history.
