More winter showers over the next 24 hours are expected to cause treacherous driving conditions along the eastern seaboard, Met Éireann warned today.
A spokesperson for Met Éireann told ireland.comthat while "we're all in for cold a spell [lasting] into early next week," the west, south west and midlands will be mainly dry.
Counties along the east coast will be worse affected by wintry showers arriving tonight over the Irish sea. To a lesser extent, counties Meath, Kildare and Kilkenny will be affected by the showers. However, Met Éireann warned that all high ground in eastern regions would be affected.
There will be a widespread frost tonight throughout the country which will cause a major problem for motorists where snow has already fallen underneath.
AA Roadwatch has advised motorists that while driving conditions in the midlands and along the east coast are still dangerous, they have improved along major routes from earlier in the morning.
In Meath, conditions have improved in Navan but back roads are still very icy and traffic is slow in the town. Back roads in most eastern counties are still treacherous.
Iarnrod Éireann has advised rail passengers travelling from Drogheda and Dundalk to expect delays of between 15 and 30 minutes due to point problems. They expect the situation to be resolved at "midday".
The Dublin Airport Authority has said there were no flights cancelled due to weather at Dublin Airport, but, a number of flights to Charles De Gaulle Aiport in Paris had been cancelled due to adverse weather conditions there.
