Cricket: Dubliner Eoin Morgan arrived in Chittagong today to join the rest of his England team mates in place of the injured Kevin Pietersen.
The Irishman was allowed to join the squad after the International Cricket Council (ICC) yesterday approved their request to replace Pietersen, who has been sidelined with a hernia complaint.
The injury not only rules Pietersen out of the remainder of the World Cup but also his Indian Premier League contract with the Deccan Chargers. The South African-born player flew home from Chennai after England’s win over South Africa.
Left-hander Morgan was previously replaced by Ravi Bopara due to a broken finger picked up during the one-day series against Australia earlier in the year. And even if he doesn’t make the Bangladesh game on Friday, he should be available to England selectors should they advance to the knockout stages.
Meanwhile, England paceman Stuart Broad is confident his latest injury setback is not as serious as the one which curtailed his Ashes tour.
Broad suffered a side strain in Sunday's win over South Africa and has undergone a scan with the results expected later today. He is doubtful for the Bangladesh game but is optimistic he will not have to spend too long on the sidelines.
"I'm not too down at the minute because I don't know what the injury is. But obviously, I'll be bitterly disappointed if it's the end of my World Cup," said Broad, who had to leave the England squad in Australia after the second Test in Adelaide.
"It's in a different area," he added. "I didn't get the short stabbing pain that I did in the Ashes, so that's a good sign this is not as severe as that."
An England and Wales Cricket Board spokesman added: "We will know the results later this afternoon but obviously he is in doubt for Friday's match.
"Pending further assessment of the scans we will also know what the outcome is like for the rest of the tournament as well."
England reignited their World Cup campaign with the win over South Africa after their surprise defeat to Ireland in their previous match.
"We're delighted as a squad and personally to perform as well as I did against South Africa," said Broad, who claimed four for 15 as the Proteas were bowled out for 165 chasing 172 to win.
