Cricket:Eoin Morgan became the first player to score one day centuries for two different countries and prevented England slipping to a first ever defeat against Bangladesh series in the process. England scored 261-8 in response to Bangladesh's 260-6 in the 50-over match.
Bangladesh had apparently bowled themselves into a winning position as they sought a full set of scalps among the Test-playing nations but Morgan, who made a masterful 110 not out, smashed 16 off the penultimate over to guide England over the line by two wickets.
The Dubliner, who had previously reached 100 with Ireland, did not even celebrate his hundred, only betraying emotion after sealing victory with a mighty six off Shafiul Islam.
A raucous home crowd were stunned into silence by Morgan’s heroics after it seemed the excellent Shakib Al Hasan had bowled them to the point of triumph.
Captain Alastair Cook hailed a “fantastic” innings from Morgan as the tourists took an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series.
“It got a bit close for our liking but Eoin came in with a fantastic knock and deserved to win the game,” Cook said.
“He was calm under pressure and then dominated in the power play, it was a fantastic knock.”
A modest Morgan added: “I didn’t actually know I’d reached a hundred, the scoreboard was a bit slow but I’ll take it. We stuck to our guns, the plan was to take it to the last over and use the short boundary and it worked well. We’re delighted with the win.
“It’s about sticking to your plan and knowing your areas, your strengths and being confident with them. Treddy (James Tredwell) wasn’t nervous at all on his debut. He was very calm, got me on strike and I managed to take advantage.”
