Cricket:Injured batsman Eoin Morgan will be back to fitness sooner than expected after confirming he does not need an operation on his broken finger. Morgan, considered England's best limited-overs batsman, has been forced to miss the World Cup after the break was found in the middle finger of his left hand.

Ravi Bopara was named as his replacement when the team arrived back in England from Australia. It had been thought Morgan was so crucial to the side’s plans that he may have been retained in the 15-man party with a view to playing in the knockout stages, if fit.

But on the side’s return to Heathrow team director Andy Flower indicated Morgan was unlikely to be available at any point during the tournament.

A post on the Dubliner’s Twitter page today was more optimistic about his recovery, though. It read: “Some good news this morning . . . no need for an op on my finger . . . pretty much healed. Will be back sooner than expected.”
