Clinton Morrison is confident of winning his fight for full fitness ahead of the Republic of Ireland's upcoming European Championship qualifying matches against Russia and Switzerland.

Morrison reignited his international career at Lansdowne Road last night by coming off the bench to score the winning goal against Australia in his first competitive game for five months.

The Birmingham striker wants to play a big part in the vital clashes with Russia and Switzerland but admitted his injury problems are not quite over.

Morrison, who had been struggling with a shoulder injury, said: "I'm not fit - I was breathing hard in the last five minutes and I only played for half an hour.

"It was a long struggle with the shoulder injury but I'm pleased and hopefully things can carry on going as they are."

Robbie Keane was stretchered off after 45 minutes with suspected ankle ligament damage but Ireland assistant and Spurs first-team coach Chris Hughton is hopeful the damage is not serious.

Hughton told Tottenham's website: "We're hopeful the injury isn't as bad as we first thought it would be. It looks like the ankle ligaments but we won't know for sure until our physio has had a look at it."

If Keane did prove unavailable Morrison would be a popular and eager replacement in the Irish forward line. He: "I love playing in front of the home fans as they're brilliant and they give me a great reception.
