A US pence broker yesterday said he hoped Sinn Fein's success in the Northern elections would lead to a new IRA ceasefire. Former Congressman Mr Bruce Morrison, who was one of the key players in the securing of the 1994 IRA ceasefire, said the new British government now had the strength "to do the right thing in Ireland".
Mr Morrison said he was hopeful Sinn Fein's success represented an endorsement of the party's peace strategy which led to the IRA ceasefire. "I hope it could undergird a new ceasefire and a meaningful joining of the talks by Sinn Fein and those talks moving to substantive matters," he told RTE radio.
"I hear that as what the elected candidates Gerry Adams and Martin McGuinness are saying and I would think it presents an opportunity for the British government to take advantage of that interpretation."
