Locals said at least one mortar round landed near the police station. One wounded soldier was led away by other troops.
Elsewhere, a suspected car bomb exploded outside a Baghdad hotel used by foreigners and wounded at least two people.
Witnesses said a stationary car exploded outside the Karma hotel, and the blast was also close to an Australian military checkpoint near the embassy.
The hotel was not severely damaged in the blast, although several windows were blown out.
