A mortar attack on a market in the town of Baquba, northeast of Baghdad, killed eight Iraqis, the US military said today.
A US Army spokesman said it was not known who attacked yesterday evening.
Baquba lies in the "Sunni triangle" region, a focal point for attacks on US forces and an area that sees support for ousted leader Saddam Hussein.
The spokesman said no US soldiers were hurt in the attack. Since May 1st, 79 U.S. soldiers have been killed in guerrilla attacks in Iraq.
The mortar bombing was the latest in a string of deadly attacks in Iraq this week.
Yesterday morning, a bomb at a Baghdad hotel used by US network NBC killed a Somali guard. The previous day a roadside bomb meant for a US convoy exploded beside two civilian buses, killing an Iraqi.
On Monday, a suicide car bomber blew himself up near the United Nations headquarters in Baghdad, also killing a security guard.
