The housing organisation Threshold has called on the Central Bank to issue comprehensive figures for mortgage arrears and repossessions. This follows a statement from the assistant director-general of the bank, Mr Gareth Murphy, saying that the number of repossessions was significantly down over the past two years.

"Threshold has no evidence to suggest that the rate of decline of repossessions, approximately 10 per cent between 1994 and 1995, and 8 per cent between 1996 and 1997, is anything as high as the 25 per cent claimed by the Central Bank," it said in a statement.

Threshold's director, Mr Kieran Murphy, said the only comprehensive figures are from the building societies, and they are published a year late.

The banks do not provide figures for repossessions, he said.
