Russian authorities have ordered a stop to the screening of World Cup games on giant outdoor screens after rioting in Moscow left two people dead yesterday.

Thousands went on the rampage in the capital after the nation's soccer team were defeated 1-0, reducing their chance of progressing to the second round of the tournament.

After the final whistle, thousands of disgruntled fans overturned and burnt cars and three bottles in the centre of Moscow. A 20-year-old was stabbed to death during the trouble and a policeman who was injured died later in hospital.

Authorities have been criticised for bad planning after police only arrived at the scene of the violence an hour after it started. ]
