A mother and her two young children were injured in an incident involving a car that allegedly attempted to avoid a Garda checkpoint and collided with another vehicle. Gardaí are investigating the incident, which happened over the weekend at Cahercalla More on the N85 link road to the M18 motorway on the outskirts of Ennis, Co Clare.
A woman suffered facial injuries, including a suspected broken nose, while her two toddlers were slightly injured after their car and a 4x4 vehicle collided. The male and female occupants of the 4x4 were unhurt, but were said to be shocked by the incident.
Gardaí are investigating whether the male driver of the Toyota car attempted to make a U-turn on the road in an effort to evade a Garda checkpoint ahead.
The 4x4 vehicle, which was travelling in the same direction, was unable to avoid the car and ploughed into the driver’s side.
Two units of the fire brigade along with two ambulances and a rapid response advanced paramedic unit from Ennis responded to the incident.
The male occupant of the car was breath-tested at the scene before being arrested on suspicion of drink-driving. He was taken to Ennis Garda station but was later released without charge.
