A judge heard a 27-year-old woman describe in court yesterday how she was attacked and beaten up by the wife and son of a man with whom she admitted she was having an affair.
Ms Celine Doherty, Lannett, Inniskeen, Co Monaghan, told Judge Flann Brennan at the District Court in Carrickmacross how she was set upon by Mrs Mary Rooney, also of Lannett, and her son, Kenneth, after they caught her hiding at the back of their home.
She told the court she was "having an affair at the time" with Mrs Rooney's husband, Brian, and was waiting for him at the back of the house.
She alleged she was knocked down and kicked by Mrs Rooney. She claimed that after "the beating and kicking" Mr Kenneth Rooney dragged her along the ground from the premises, a distance of some 200 metres, to the public road. Ms Doherty said the incident happened after she had been drinking in a pub with Mrs Rooney's husband. She said they had walked to his house and she was waiting for him to return when she was discovered. Mrs Rooney denied she had been involved in any incident with Ms Doherty, but said she had known the girl, because she was "tricking" with her husband.
Judge Brennan convicted Mrs Rooney and her son on assault charges and reserved sentence until a further hearing, pending probation and welfare reports.
