Gardai were last night investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a young man in the east Galway village of Eyrecourt.
The body Mr John Rooney, aged 21, of Eyrecourt Mall, was discovered by his mother in a bedroom in their family home at about noon yesterday.
Shortly afterwards the gardaí were called to the scene and said they were treating the death as suspicious.
Assistant State Pathologist Dr Marie Cassidy travelled to the scene yesterday evening and carried out a preliminary post- mortem.
Afterwards, the body was moved to Portiuncala Hospital, Ballinasloe, for a full post-mortem, which gardaí said may not be completed until this morning.
There had been local reports of an incident in the village on Sunday night after the pubs closed, which gardaí believed could be connected to the death.
Gardaí would not confirm if the young man was involved in the reported incident, but were interviewing eyewitnesses yesterday and appealing for those who may have seen anything to come forward.
An area on a street in the village was sealed off for examination by members of the Garda Technical Bureau.
The man is understood to have returned home in the early hours of yesterday morning and to have died some hours later.
Gardaí said last night they were trying to trace the man's movements and establish the cause of his death.
