A woman and her 10-year-old son, from Nobber, Co Meath, remained in a critical condition in hospital last night following a car crash that has claimed the lives of three children in their extended family.
A spokesperson for the North Eastern Health Board confirmed that Mrs Catherine Curtis and Wayne Curtis remained critically ill although their conditions had stabilised.
They are being cared for in Monaghan General Hospital.
In a separate accident early yesterday two teenagers died at Tyrrellspass, Co Westmeath, when a van in which they were travelling hit a wall on the N6 at Tyrrellspass at about 7 a.m.
They were named as Joseph Dunne (17), Tullow, Co Carlow, and Colin Coleman (17), Hacketstown, Co Carlow.
Mrs Curtis and her son were passengers in a car which collided with a tanker on the Monaghan-Cootehill road on Wednesday afternoon.
Mrs Curtis's husband, Thomas, and their three-month-old daughter, Chloe, were the only passengers in the car to escape uninjured.
Post-mortems were carried out on the bodies of the victims yesterday morning. They were Garry Curtis (15), a nephew of Mr Curtis, Jamie Curtis (14), a sister of Mr Curtis, and Shauna (5), the couple's third child.
A Garda investigation into the cause of the accident is continuing.
Gardai have also released the name of a 49-year-old Co Waterford man who died in a road accident in Co Carlow.
Mr Peter James Moloney from Woodstown died after a collision between three vehicles on the Borris-Bagenalstown road.
The deaths yesterday of the two 17-year-olds bring to 219 the number of people who have died this year in road accidents in the State. In the same period last year, 224 people died.
