There were dramatic scenes in Limerick city centre at lunchtime yesterday when armed gardaí arrested a motorist suspected of transporting a firearm and ammunition from Cork.
Armed detectives from Limerick city, backed up by members of the Regional Support Unit, blocked a suspect vehicle on O’Connell Street close to the old county council offices shortly after midday.
A shotgun and three rounds of ammunition were found in the car. The driver was arrested at the scene.
It’s understood the 25-year-old man from Cork, who is known to gardaí, was transporting the gun to Limerick for the use of local criminals.
He was brought to Roxboro Garda station where he was being held for questioning last night under section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act.
