A 22-year-old man was convicted of driving under the influence of amphetamines and cannabis at Killarney District Court yesterday.Judge Humphrey Kelleher said it was the first time in 23 years he had come across such a case.

Niall Mahoney of Clancy Park, Ennis, Co Clare was seen driving without lights by Killarney gardaí at around 1.30 a.m. on February 11th last near the Muckross Road.

Gardaí arrested him and brought him to Killarney Garda station where a urine sample was given. The sample was found to have a concentration of amphetamines and cannabis-type drugs.

Mahoney, who pleaded guilty to the charges of possession, driving under the influence of an intoxicant and of having no car insurance, is serving a sentence imposed on him at the Circuit Criminal Court in Kilrush for drugs offences and for not having car insurance, Supt Michael Maher told the court.
