Safety advice:Motorists should drive with extreme caution when there is fog, according to the Road Safety Authority.
Because motorways are designed to be driven on quickly, it is easy to assume that a higher speed than on other roads will be safe in fog. But this is not the case. When you encounter fog you should:
• Increase the distance between yourself and the vehicles in front and reduce speed.
• Put on your fog lights front and rear straight away.
• If you can clearly see the lights of the vehicle in front of you, you are probably too close to them.
• Adjust your stopping distances as if for rain because in fog the road is wet.
• Do not let other people determine the speed that you are doing.
• Remember to switch off your lights when you are clear of the fog.
