Mountjoy prisoner 'committed suicide', inquest hears

A prisoner serving a short sentence in Mountjoy Prison was found hanging in his cell, an inquest heard today.

A prisoner serving a short sentence in Mountjoy Prison was found hanging in his cell, an inquest heard today.

Steven Prior, 21, from Moatview Drive, in Coolock, Dublin, was pronounced dead on arrival at the Mater Hospital on October 27th last year.

At Dublin Coroner's Court, the jury returned a verdict of death by suicide.

Mr Prior was found hanging from the window bars of his cell at 6.30 a.m. by a prison officer. He also had lacerations to his neck and wrist which he had inflicted on himself with a disposable razor blade.

However according to the acting state pathologist, Dr Richard Sheppard, the cause of death was hanging rather than the lacerations which were superficial.
