PARIS - The French government yesterday appointed an arbitrator to try to find a way out of the week long French truck drivers' strike.

The Transport Minister, Mr Bernard Pons, appointed ministry official Mr Robert Cros as mediator between truckers and their employers. Mr Cros already chaired failed talks between the two sides on Saturday. The strike involves a growing number of France's 200,000 truck drivers, demanding better pay and conditions. The dispute, which has left some Irish drivers stranded in France, has already cost Irish firms about £1.5 million, according to the Irish Road Haulage Association.
