Manila - A group of Philippines congressmen filed a motion yesterday to impeach President Joseph Estrada for alleged links to gambling lords.
It was the first official step taken by the opposition in its campaign to force Mr Estrada out of office after accusations he received 414 million pesos ($8.7 million) in payoffs from gambling syndicates running an illegal numbers game. The President said the charges are a "political hatchet job" by his opponents.
