Mr Jeffrey Donaldson, the anti-agreement Ulster Unionist MP, has said that current attempts to save the peace process will fail unless the Provisional IRA disbands.
The British Prime Minister, Mr Tony Blair, is to hold talks with the Ulster Unionist leader, Mr David Trimble, in London tomorrow in the first of a series of meetings to break the deadlock in the North.
Mr Donaldson warned that the issues had to be tackled head-on. "The unionist community has lost all confidence in this process. The only way this will work is if the republican movement disbands."
There has been intense speculation of a new deal involving further Provisional IRA decommissioning and Sinn Féin signing up to the Policing Board. However, Mr Donaldson said it would be ludicrous to allow Sinn Féin on to the Policing Board while the Provisional IRA was still training, targeting and buying weapons.
"The government needs to know that if they bring in Adams and company in the current circumstances, unionists will walk out. We are in a deep political crisis at the moment and I see no indication at this stage that the IRA is prepared to disband."
