A Dublin man accused of murder was found guilty but insane at the Central Criminal Court yesterday. Mr Derek Gibbons (37) had denied the murder of a neighbour, Mr Gerard "Redser" Doyle (40), on December 21st, 1996. Both men were residents of Markievicz House, Townsend Street, at the time of the killing.
Previously the court heard that the accused man, with an IQ of 56, had stabbed his next-door neighbour with a hunting knife following what he believed was a vendetta of conspiracy against him by unknown persons. Within an hour of the stabbing Mr Gibbons told gardai: "I did it."
A consultant psychiatrist, Dr Brian McCaffrey, had told the court that his client, the accused man, had suffered from a "major form of mental illness . . . probably [going] back to 1993".
