Murder inquiry after man assaulted at party dies

Gardaí have begun a murder investigation after a man who was injured in an assault in Co Cavan died in hospital yesterday.

Postmortem results showed that the man died from injuries sustained in an assault at the weekend.

Gardaí are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident, which occurred during a St Patrick’s Day party at a house in Rosehill, Mullagh, in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The victim, Ciaran O’Connell (22), was removed to Cavan General Hospital to be treated for his injuries before being transferred to Beaumont Hospital when his condition deteriorated. He was pronounced dead in the early hours of yesterday.

Gardaí have already interviewed a number of people who were at the house party.

Mr O’Connell and his family had moved to Mullagh from Dublin some 10 years ago.
