Murder inquiry as body found in Ballymun

Gardaí yesterday began a murder investigation after a man's body was found in Ballymun in Dublin.

The body was discovered in a flat at Sillogue Road shortly before 3pm on Thursday.

A Garda source said officers originally believed the victim had died of a drug overdose. However, a postmortem examination carried out at the City Morgue by Deputy State Pathologist Dr Michael Curtis revealed that he had died following an assault.

The victim, Gregory Rowan (44), was originally from Finglas but had moved into the first-floor flat at Sillogue Road about two months ago having spent some time living in hostels in the city.

It is believed that he was involved in a row in the flat with several other men.

His body was found by some local children on Thursday afternoon. An ambulance crew was called to the scene and they alerted gardaí at Ballymun station.

Investigating officers have already spoken to several witnesses, and no further assistance is being sought from the public.

Neighbours said Mr Rowan was not known to most residents, as he had been living there for only a short time.

"He's not somebody we'd know. The kids were looking in through his window yesterday and just saw the body," said Mary Boylan, who lives in the complex where the body was found.

"I'm not surprised it happened here, really. This is the worst road in Ballymun," she said, adding that nobody had reported seeing anything suspicious in the past few days.

The Garda Technical Bureau carried out an examination of the scene yesterday and officers kept a presence at the flat throughout the day.

Meanwhile, a €10,000 reward has been offered for information leading to the apprehension of a gang which attacked a man in Dublin last year, leaving him with permanent brain damage.

Vincent O'Brien (41) from Bluebell was attacked by a group of four men in their late 20s at 2.45am on Thursday, August 18th 2005. The incident happened on Huband Road, Bluebell, near the Bernard Curtis flats.

On the anniversary of the attack, the victim's mother Mary O'Brien yesterday appealed to anyone with information to contact gardaí or Crimestoppers.

"Crimestoppers and the family, we have put up a €10,000 award for any information and I plead with anybody out there, if you have any information, to please come forward," Mrs O'Brien said.

Mr O'Brien has been in hospital in Dublin since the assault and is now fully dependent on care.

"He is a completely different person to what I have known; he doesn't know me. It is very hard for me. He has no quality of life whatsoever," Mrs O'Brien told RTÉ News, adding that her son is fed through a tube to his stomach and can eat only ice-cream and jelly.

"He begs me, he says 'Mary, I'm begging you, will you please ask me Mam to come in to see me.' And I am there every single day and I have been for the past 12 months."

Thousands of leaflets appealing to the public for information were distributed earlier this year to households in the Bluebell area and more will be handed out over the coming week.
