Gardaí have begun a murder inquiry after post-mortem on a man whose body was found in a flat in Dublin last night showed he died of head injuries.

Thomas Brady, a 49-year-old father of six, was taken from a flat in Dolphin House in Rialto to Saint James Hospital shortly before 8.00 p.m.

Gardaí are still trying to establish a motive for the attack.

A team from the Garda Technical Bureau conducted a forensic examination of the scene.

It is understood there were no signs of a break-in at the man's flat.

The State Pathologist, Dr Marie Cassidy, performed a post-mortem tonight which showed Mr Brady had been murdered.

Officers investigating the death have appealed to anybody who saw suspicious activity in the Dolphin House or Dolphins Barn area between 7 and 8 p.m. last night to contact their incident room in Kilmainham Garda station on 01-666-9700.
