PSNI detectives in Belfast today launched their second murder inquiry in 24 hours following the killing of a man in his 40s, believed to be a foreign national, whose body was found at a house in the city's main student district.

Two men have been have detained in connection with his death. The victim is understood to have suffered head injuries and was discovered by a contractor due to carry out repair work at the Penrose Street address in the Holylands area yesterday.

Blood was spotted on the doorstep outside the property, sources claimed. After post-mortem tests were completed today a police spokeswoman confirmed they were treating the death as murder.

Meanwhile, detectives are seeking an Australian backpacker they believe may have witnessed a fatal beating in the city centre. A 56-year-old man attacked and injured during a fight near the Ulster Hall concert venue at Bedford Street on Saturday died last night in hospital.

The woman tourist ran to a nearby restaurant seeking help. Police who have arrested one man over the attack said she may have travelled on anywhere in Northern Ireland, into the Republic or across to the UK.
