GARDAÍ ARE expected to launch a murder inquiry later today following a postmortem on the remains of a man found dumped on waste ground.

If confirmed as murder, the case will be the fifth murder since the start of the year.

Detectives are working on the theory the remains are those of a man in his 20s from west Dublin who went missing last week.

Gardaí have asked that the dead man’s name would not be released until all relatives had been contacted.

The remains were found on waste ground at Tyrellstown in west Dublin just after 4.30pm by members of a Garda search team.

The victim, whose family are not Irish but who was brought up here, is believed to have been stabbed to death during an altercation last week.

After learning he was missing, gardaí received information suggesting he had been stabbed and his remains dumped.

A Garda team was assembled and has been searching waste ground around the west Dublin suburb in recent days before the decomposed body was found yesterday. The area was sealed off and the body remained at the scene overnight.

The State Pathologist Dr Marie Cassidy is due to carry out a preliminary examination of the remains this morning. The body is then due to be taken to Connolly Hospital, Blanchardstown, for a full postmortem.

Intelligence gathered by the investigating team at Blanchardstown Garda station indicates the man was stabbed before being taken away and dumped in the location where he was found.

Gardaí have already interviewed a number of people about, what was until yesterday, the man’s disappearance and presumed murder.

That investigation will be upgraded to a murder inquiry and will intensify if, as expected, the postmortem reveals the victim was stabbed to death.

The results of the postmortem are expected this afternoon.
