Police investigating the murder of a man, found beaten and left for dead in his flat, yesterday said they believed the motive was not sectarian.

Mr Robert Letson (45), was unconscious at his flat on the outskirts of north Belfast last Sunday. He died later in hospital.

Mr Letson, who was separated from his wife, lived alone in Ardmillan Drive in the Rathcoole Estate. Police today said three men called at the victim's home, leaving a short time later with plastic bin liners containing clothing. They drove away in a silver-coloured car. Detective Superintendent Alan Mains said there did not appear to be any paramilitary involvement in the murder. He said he was in no doubt that some people on the estate knew who carried out the attack. "They know the three people who were involved, I have absolutely no doubt about that. I am asking them to come forward to try to bring some sort of logic to this sad state of affairs."
