Items of clothing believed to have belonged to murdered British 10-year-olds Jessica Chapman and Holly Wells have been found.
A Cambridgeshire Police spokesman confirmed the discovery.
But he said that after taking legal advice the force would not disclose when or where the clothes were found, or in what condition.
"I can confirm that certain items of clothing believed to have been worn by Jessica Chapman and Holly Wells when they were reported missing have been found by police," he said.
The confirmation follows a newspaper report that the Manchester United shirts worn by the best friends in a photograph taken just hours before they disappeared had been found and were being examined by forensic experts.
Mr Ian Huntley, 28, a school caretaker in the girls' home village of Soham, has been charged with abducting and murdering the pair.
He is being held at the high security Rampton Hospital in Nottinghamshire while psychiatric tests are carried out.
His girlfriend, Ms Maxine Carr, 25, who has been charged with attempting to pervert the course of justice, was remanded in custody when she appeared before magistrates in Peterborough last week.
