Swimming: There was better news for the Irish contingent at the European Swimming Championships in Budapest as Barry Murphy broke the 100 metres freestyle record in this morning's heats.
However, his time of 50.79 seconds, which bettered Earl McCarthy's 10-year-old Irish record, was not good enough to earn passage to the semi-finals. Not one Irish swimmer has qualified from a heat so far in these championships.
The Dubliner was the only member of the Irish team in action today but tomorrow will see five taking to the pool with Murphy, Andrew Bree and Jonathon Nixon going in the 50 metres breaststroke while Clare Dawson will take part in the 50 metres freestyle Melanie Nocher competes in the 50 metres backstroke.
