Murphy fourth in 800m freestyle

Swimming: Ireland's Gráinne Murphy finished fourth in the women's 800m freestyle at the European Short Course Swimming championship in Szczecin in Poland today.

The Wexford teenager set a new Irish record when finishing in eight minutes 19.39 seconds in the heat declared event but was over three seconds behind Melanie Costa Schmid (8.16.28) of Spain in third.

Costa Schmid’s compatriot Erika Villaecija Garcia (8.12.23) was second behind Denmark’s Lotte Friis (8.07.53).

Friis beat Murphy to the gold medal at last year’s European Long Course 1500 freestyle title in Budapest.

Aisling Cooney was unable to progress from the heats of the 50m butterfly when finishing 41st in a time of 28.40 seconds.

Murphy is back in action tomorrow in the heats of both the 400m freestyle – with Melanie Nocher, Clare Dawson and Niamh O’Sullivan.- and 100m butterfly.

Other Irish competitors in action tomorrow include Nicholas Quinn and Dan Sweeney (50m breaststroke), Bethany Carson (100m butterfly), Cooney (50m backstroke) and Shani Stallard (100m breaststroke).

Ireland will compete in the women’s 4x50m medley relay
