Ireland's Gary Murphy finds himself just one shot off the lead after day two of the gruelling European Tour Qualifying School Finals in Spain.

Murphy, (30), fired a second round 64, which added to yesterday's opening 67, leaves him one shot behind England's Philip Archer and Spain's Eduardo de la Riva who share the lead on 130.

The joint leaders both fired second round 63's on the second of the six day marathon which will include a cut after four rounds.

Wexford club pro Damian McGrane blasted his way back into contention with a second round 64 to leave the 31-year-old in a tie for 12th place on eight-under.

Gary Cullen consolidated his magnificent opening 63 with a 72 today as the Dubliner finds himself in a tie for 20th place.

Stephen Browne was next of the Irishmen hoping to secure their card for next season. The 2000 European Amateur champion slipped back into a tie for 50th after today's 73.

Philip Walton, the ex-Ryder Cup hero from 1995, is 57th on four-under after a 71 at the Pals venue.

"I played scrappy," he commented. "I missed a lot of fairways, so it was a good score considering."

Last year's British amateur champion Michael Hoey, who began the event with a quadruple bogey eight and a round of 77, hit back with a 65 at Emporda, but is still only joint 98th.

Killarney amateur Danny Sugrue added a second round 73 to yesterday's 71 and has much work still to do if he is make the cut.
